Because life isn’t always pre-measured
So glad you’re here!
Far from being the student in grade 8C who wrote 'Life Is A Cake Mix' many moons ago, I am struck by my younger self's perspective, which implies that life is either simplified and predetermined or requires personal input to be meaningful. However, as I revisit this grade 8C project piece repeatedly, I can’t help but ask myself: what was I really trying to say, and does it all make sense now?
Welcome to Life Is A Cake Mix, a weekly public reflection where I stir together personal musings, poetry, fictional tales, and philosophical insights, all gently centred on love, with a nod to the many layers of living.
Whisking it together
In this space, I get to write my own adventures…
I have always loved stories told in books; written words that lead your mind on adventures daring, exhilarating, comical, fantastical, heartbreaking, perilous, primitive, blood-thirsty – heroic to the moods of the heart. These tales taught me that a life is not merely lived, but composed.
Holding space for reflection through storytelling, photography, and food entrepreneurship, has led me back to something I was already reaching for at thirteen: life is not a pre-determined recipe, but a series of choices about what we fold into our narrative.
“You’ll adjust with time,” I would tell my younger self, but nothing quite fit. Life only began to take shape through what I chose to add. “It’s a little bit of this, a little bit of that,” I would say, standing in the kitchen from a very young age.
Like a cake mix resting on the counter of existence, the raw ingredients of our early years – the flour of circumstance, the sugar of fleeting joy, the leavening of ambition – remain inert until we decide to stir the bowl.
We are not merely baked by the oven of time; we are the active agents of our own composition, whisking together the disparate elements of our experiences to create a structure that can finally hold the weight of our own identity.
